The farm and animals
Our farm measures 400 hectare of land and we farm an additional 150 hectare. Apart from around 100 icelandic horses we also have 280 sheep and about 25 - 30 milking cows and about 70 younger calfs and cows. For the winter we need about 1200 round bails of hey. In Iceland we only have one breed of cow and one breed of sheep, just like with the horses. Our cows are a little smaller than most breeds and they don´t milk as much. But they are well used to the climate here and can live on poorer fodder. And just like our horses they have a very kind disposition.
The sheep are spending the winter inside the stable and go out on pasture after they have lammed in the spring. We get around 450 -500 lambs every spring.
